ELL-English Language Learner
ESL/ENL-English as a Second Language/English as a New Language: The class/program ELLs take to learn English.
NYSESLAT-New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test: Test given at the end of the year to all ELLs enrolled in ESL to determine their proficiency.
NYSITELL-New York State Identification Test for English Language Learners: Test given to ELLs when they first enter the country to determine their English proficiency and how much ESL services they will need.
TESOL-Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
Bilingual Education-education in an English-language school where students with little or no English language proficiency are taught in both their native language and English.
AIS-Academic Intervention Services
RTI-Response to Intervention: A method of academic intervention used to provide early, systematic assistance to children who are having difficulty learning. All students begin with high-quality, whole class instruction (Tier 1). If student(s) are not making adequate progress, they are provided with increasingly intensive instruction matched to their needs on the basis of levels of performance and rates of progress (Tier 2).
